Sky Gazing
Sometimes people who love us can tell us kindly lies*.
When I was around ten years of age, I was on holiday with my parents in Bray, County Wicklow. On the top of a hill overlooking Bray there was a restaurant. A steep path led up to the top of the hill, and at the foot of the path there was a notice that read:
Standing at the bottom boys Gazing at the sky, How can you get up boys If you never try. My father was fond of repeating those words to me, and in the period that followed I absorbed its message well. For many years it was both a motivator of my best endeavours and a burden of some significant failures. The burden was that through fear of failure I sometimes tried too hard. I have since found that hills are easier to climb if you shed the burden! |
